1835-1836
The Southern Baptist and General Intelligencer was published in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1835 to 1836. The publication was an early effort of South Carolina Baptists to begin a newspaper. Although not directly supported by the South Carolina Convention, it had significant support from Baptists in the state. William Henry Brisbane served as editor. The weekly newspaper included information about Baptists in the state, particularly in the Charleston area. The publication also included secular news about events in the United States and even in other countries. The religious news focused on church and association events, revival meetings, theological issues, social concerns (such as slavery), and sermons. The 1835 issues are in a 16-page journal format and the 1836 issues are more of a tabloid format of four pages. The condition of the 1835 issues is good but the 1836 issues are in poor condition and difficult to read all of the newspaper
