National Baptist Magazine

1894-1901

The National Baptist Magazine, 1894-1901, was the first official publication of the National Baptist Convention (NBC).  The publication began as a quarterly, published in Washington, D.C., but became a monthly journal in June 1898.  The managing editor was William Bishop Johnson, pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.  The magazine was later published by the National Baptist Publishing Board in Nashville, Tennessee, with R.H. Boyd serving as Business Manager.  No issues were published beyond 1901.

The publication encompassed a variety of articles and information.  Included in the issues was information on religious topics, Baptist matters, and contemporary issues.  The topics included items on race relations, lynching, education, temperance, church discipline, mission work, and denominational concerns.  The journal also published sermons, editorials, book reviews, biographical sketches on Baptist leaders, photographs, and poetry.  Most issues included a table of contents.  The issues were scanned from microfilm produced by the American Baptist Historical Society, who granted permission to make this resource available on the SBHLA website.
