The Commission was the earliest Foreign Mission Board publication. The early Commission was produced from 1849 to 1851 and 1856 to 1861. It ceased publication due the Civil War. The early publication included letters and reports from missionaries in China and Liberia, the need for missionaries and the need for funds to continue the missionary enterprise. The Foreign Mission Board’s periodical, beginning in 1938 reinstituted the title, The Commission, as the flagship publication of the Board until the suspension of the magazine in 2003. The magazine included articles, missionary stories, photograph features, and news updates.
