In November 1941, Bishop College, a historically black college in Marshall, Texas, founded in 1881 by the Baptist Home Mission Society, sponsored an inter-racial conference on Christian Education for Negroes Under Baptist Auspices. The conference was held in the Baptist Building in Dallas, Texas, and included representatives from the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Bishop College, the Texas Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention, Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas, General Baptist Convention of Texas, Baylor University, Woman’s Missionary Union of the BGCT, Woman’s Auxiliary of the Texas Baptist Convention, Baptist Relief and Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Butler College, Conroe College, the Baptist Standard newspaper of the BGCT, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Papers and presentations at the event addressed cooperative work in education between White and Black Baptists and aimed to promote awareness of African American Baptist colleges and universities within the Texas education system.
