1862-1865
The Child’s Index was a monthly periodical published by Samuel Boykin in Macon, Georgia, from 1862-1865. It included articles for children, poetry, Bible questions, and illustrations. The newspaper was four pages in length. Boykin (1829-1899), a two-time graduate of the University of Georgia, also served as editor of the Georgia Baptist newspaper, the Christian Index, from 1859-1866. The Civil War compelled him to suspend publication of both the Christian Index and Child’s Index in 1865. Boykin re-issued the Child’s Index in early 1866 as the Child’s Delight, when a reviewer wrote, “it comes nearer filling our idea of what a child’s paper should be than any we have seen.”
