Baptists United News

1972-1986

Baptists United News was an independent publication started in 1972 in Morganton, North Carolina.  It was published by Baptists United for Spiritual Renewal and edited by Robert M. Tenery.  The publication’s purpose was to raise concerns about a liberal drift in Southern Baptist institutions.  The newspaper was published on an irregular basis but produced more often near the time for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.  The publication represented the conservative/fundamentalist wing of Southern Baptists and supported a leadership change for it agencies and seminaries.  The articles in Baptists United News were critical of Sunday School Board publications and leaders as well as other SBC agencies’ leadership, particularly the Christian Life Commission.  It also attacked those identified as liberal/moderate professors at Baptist universities and seminaries.  The publication ceased in 1986.
