1948 to 1996
Baptist Press is a news gathering and distribution service sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. Baptist Press began in 1946 as the Southern Baptist Press Association (SBPA) issued by the Sunday School Board’s Department of Survey, Statistics, and Information. The Executive Committee assumed responsibility for Baptist Press and in 1947 elected C. E. Bryant as director of publicity. The stories found in Baptist Press relate news about Baptist events, activities, institutions, and people. It provides researchers and historians a valuable source for information and identification. The news releases were issued sporadically in the early days of Baptist Press. By the sixties, the releases were issued in packets with 5 to 6 stories. In the late 1980’s each release is identified with an issue number. All of the releases are dated. They cover the time period from 1948 to 1996. Baptist Press releases after 1996 are available on the Baptist Press website at www.bpnews.net.
