1965-2022
The journal Baptist History and Heritage began publication in 1965, published by the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Historical Society. Davis C. Woolley, the second executive director of the SBC Historical Commission and the first editor of the journal, wrote in the first issue that the journal was “dedicated to the pursuit of historical information that will enable Baptists to understand themselves, to appreciate their past, and to discover historical perspective for the future.” The following individuals have served as editors of the journal: Davis C. Woolley (1965-1971), Lynn E. May, Jr. (1971-1995), Slayden A. Yarbrough (1995-1999), Merrill M. Hawkins, Jr. (1999-2003), Pamela R. Durso (2003-2010), C. Douglas Weaver (2010), Bruce T. Gourley (2011-2017), Bill Pitts (2017-2019), and Joe Coker (2019-present). When the Historical Commission of the SBC was dissolved in 1997, the Southern Baptist Historical Society became the sole publisher of the journal. In 2001, the SBHS changed its name to the Baptist History and Heritage Society and assumed publication of the journal.
Starting in the late 1970s, the journal began organizing most issues around themes. These issue themes are provided in the file titles of journal issues in this web presentation. Themes listed for journal issues for the first 10 years of the journal’s publication are taken from the titles of the publication’s editorials. Items in this presentation are any word searchable.
