1990-2000
Following the firings of Baptist Press editors Al Shackelford and Dan Martin in 1990 by the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, Associated Baptist Press was formed by Baptist newspaper editors concerned over this action. This group of Baptist newspapers editors included Bob S. Terry (Word and Way), Don McGregor (Baptist Record), Julian Pentecost (Religious Herald), R. G. Puckett (Biblical Recorder), Robert Allen (Baptist True Union), Marv Knox (Western Recorder), and Jack Brymer (Florida Baptist Witness). It was this group and a few others that conceived the idea for Associated Baptist Press.
Floyd Craig and Dan Martin served as the initial and temporary managers of the Associated Baptist Press in its early days. Greg Warner was employed as executive editor of ABP in April 1991. The press service issued stories twice weekly in those early years. Associated Baptist Press was governed by a self-perpetuating board of directors. The mission of ABP was “to serve Christ by providing credible and compelling information about matters of faith. ”In 2014, Associated Baptist Press and the Religious Herald merged to form Baptist News Global, which is seen as a successor to ABP.
